Annual Women’s Conference Survey Findings

Each year, our women financial advisors are invited to attend the Edward Jones Women’s Conference. This three-day conference brings the top-performing women together to share their experiences, learn from thought leaders and celebrate their success. During this conference, we surveyed 100 attendees regarding issues facing women in the financial services industry. Below are just a few of the topics we covered in talking with our financial advisors. 

Recruiting More Female Clients 

According to the Center for Talent Innovation, 70% of U.S. women leave their financial advisor after their spouse passes. These women hold 39% of an estimated $28.6 trillion in investable assets, leaving a large group of women underserved in creating investment strategies. To overcome this issue, we recommend married couples attend financial advisor meetings together. This will keep both spouses informed about the actions taking place within their financial investments, as well ensure that they are comfortable with their financial advisor. 

Additional ways to close the gap in better serving women clients include leveraging existing client relationships and through women’s networks. 

“I find that involving both spouses in meetings is incredibly beneficial from a client retention perspective,” said Jennifer Marcontell, financial advisor at Edward Jones “This ensures that women are involved in the planning process and helps me, as a financial advisor, to better understand their financial goals and concerns.”

Confidence and Perseverance are Key

Of the women we surveyed said, 77% said perseverance and confidence are crucial to success as a financial advisor. These results mirror those of a recent Edward Jones study of female financial advisors in which 80% noted confidence as a primary factor impacting leadership, success and career fulfillment. 

“Women represent 19% of our firm’s financial advisor base, relative to just 14% of financial advisors in the industry,” said Katherine Mauzy, Principal of Financial Advisor Talent Acquisition. “To increase that number, we are bridging the confidence gap by offering the right programs to build, encourage and provide unique networking opportunities both at Edward Jones and within the industry.”
