Think It's Too Late for a Career Move? Think Again.

If you’ve ever thought it too late to achieve your career goals, take a moment to reflect on this quote from George Eliot: “It’s never too late to be what you might have been.”

We spend much of our lives benchmarking ourselves against time. We set goals along the lines of: I want to be married by 25, an executive by 40 and retired by 60. If we don’t meet those goals we’re often very tough on ourselves, possibly saying it’s too late. However, the quote from Eliot reminds us that as long as we’re driven and persistent, it’s never too late to achieve our goals.

If you’re ready to take the first step toward your dream career, start with these tips.

Reorient your goals

When we focus on telling ourselves it’s too late to do something, it’s easy to lose sight of what we’re trying to do in the first place. Take time to refocus on what you want to achieve and create a plan of how you are going to achieve it. Be sure to recite your goals daily to keep them fresh in your mind as you search for your perfect career.

Stay persistent

This is a familiar tip that’s worth repeating, especially when you think your moment to shine has passed. Career goals take time to achieve, but the reward can be life-changing. Whether it's attending a networking event or reaching out to your dream company about a position, stay persistent in order to make regular progress Remember, the best rewards in life are the ones you work toward.

Remember that success is a matter of perception

It’s easy to have an idea of what success looks like. However, success can take a number of different forms, each one invaluable in its own right. Don’t limit yourself to thinking “Success is making $100K per year” or “I’m successful if I work three days a week.” Consider both tangible and intangible factors when you look at new opportunities and make the move that’s right for you.

As you consider your next career move, keep these tips in mind. It’s never too late to go after what fulfills you, so start today and set yourself up for a lifetime of success. While you’re working toward your goal, remember our recommendations for career growth and revisit how to be better by being different.
